Olympus Evolt E520 shutter speed (1 Viewer)

Im new to dSLRs and im looking into this camera. The shutter speed is 1/4000, how fast is that?

Im trying to read up on it at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/olympuse3/
(where they are comparing the 3 cameras).

The old Olympus E-3 Evolt has a shutter speed of 1/8000. How does that compare to 1/4000?

Sorry if this post sounds childish, im still learning.

(I have a regular 6x point and shoot Panasonic Lumix digital but am not happy with it).

1/4000 is plenty fast enough. I don't suppose you will use even half this.

Very fast shutter speeds are used for specialist high-speed photography which is probably not something most of us do as it requires a careful set up and co-ordinated flash.

If you are taking bird photos with a long lens then most of the time the problem will be too little light and slow speeds (and consequently blurred images, but at least we don't have to pay for the film). Speeds will be somewhere generally between 1/60 and 1/500 sec.

With a shorter focal length lens for landscapes and more general use, speeds might be faster on a bright day

As Zenzero say, 1/4000 is WAY fast enough. Back say 15 years, when film SLRs ruled the world, the typical top speed was 1/2000, so 1/4000 itself is frosting on the cake.
