Pyrenees: places to stay (1 Viewer)

I am going to the Spanish Pyrenees in June. Have come across a hotel/campsite near Santa Cilia de Jaca, "Camping Pirineos". It looks very nice, if a little isolated, but I wondered if anyone had any experiance of it?

Have also tried emailing what I now regard as the mythical Hotel Aragon. Anyone had any joy with that?

Can't help with those I'm afraid but if you're interested in the Cadí-Moixeró area in the Catalan Pyrenees of NE Spain, I can put you in touch with a friend who has a self-catering apartment in the stunning Bellver de Cerdanya.

All the best

Thanks Stephen but as we only have a fortnight I think we will only manage to do the area around Jaca before dropping onto the plains and then the Ebro delta. Spain is a big country!

No worries. I'm just glad you're coming to Catalunya. If you need help with the Ebro Delta or others, let me know. The delta is big too!

Hello Andy,

Stayed there in 1993 so info is a bit out of date, judging from its website it's still fairly expensive for what it is/was. We're going in August and are planning to stay at the Valley d' Hecho campsite just up the road! As for the not in the slightest mythical Hotel Aragon, stayed there in May 2004 and very nice it was too, especially the way they cooked your meat on a giant barbeque/open fire in the middle of the restaurant (not much choice for vegetarians if I remember right!).

Have you had any luck contacting the Hotel Aragon? I have had similar difficulties. I just get a mail error when you using the email address on their website. The tarrif rates quoted on their site are for 1999!!.

I have also tried '[email protected]' but get no reply

Egret,

We stayed at Camping Pirineos in June 2004 in one of the log cabins there - which were very nice. If you want to leave very early in the morning tho it is best to leave your car outside the main gates at night as these are closed overnight - we had no problems doing this.

Cheers,

Mark

No, I gave up and have just confirmed a booking with "Camping Pirineos"; glad to see that Tanager had a good stay. The only down side is that we have to send a deposit of 50 Euros. As our bank charges £14 for the money transfer it becomes a very expensive way to send money. (I don't grudge the deposit - just the bank charge).

I gave up too and have just booked with Camping Pirineos also. Its worth challanging your bank. The HSBC tried to charge £21 for the 50 euros transfer but I argued them down to £9. (still a rip-off).

Have a look at this thread. http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=49229&highlight=uson. I was on Jules's trip in October 2005 and this hotel was excellent, with Lammergeir from bedroom window ! I think there was also a camp site a little further up the valley, which was quite remote. It is close to the French border but in a great birding area. I'm sure Jules will have the contact details for the Hotel and would respond to a PM. We also posted a trip report. Good luck it is a great area.

I stayed at Camping Pirineos two years ago - very pleasant although the cabins that back onto the main road can be a bit noisy as trucks absolutely tank down the straight. Its a bit pricey, as previously said, but excellent quality accomodation and utterly convienient. The area of scrub and grass across the road is well worth exploring if you have some slack time, there was a splendid show of Spider Orchids (sp?) and plenty of birds including Bonelli's Warblers, Wryneck and Wood Lark.

Hi Andy

What kind of accommodation are you after and where? If you stay in the Hecho valley then the Castillo d'Acher in Siresa is a decent hotel, at a good price and very near to Gabardito and the Boca del Infierno, with you know what (I suppose you know what?). If it's campsites your after then I'm afraid I can't help much, except to say that if you tried rural accommodation you'd be getting a better service/price relationship. If you think rural accommodation is suitable and you need help on this matter let me know.

By the way you might be interested in getting a copy of my book "Where the birds are in northeast Spain" before you come. It has info on the birds, accommodation, language etc. and has received very good reviews from fatbirder and Dutch Birding.
