For the fourth year in a row, Mommy Allen's Hummingbird laid her eggs in the windchime on my patio. Chicks will probably fly tomorrow. I will probably have a few weeks of the usual 'traumas', I'm sure. Last year, one of the chicks fell into my neighbor's planter. She had a plastic planter set inside a ceramic planter. The fledgling fell between the plastic planter and the ceramic. Mommy couldn't get to him, and he could not fly out. I happened to look out my window and saw mommy flying around and around the planter, landing on the plant, and hovering. I went to look and saw the chick sitting in water at the bottom of the planter. I reached in and got him. I put him on a plant in my garden and Mommy found him. That was only one incident with that chick! Every year there's some drama.

Last night, before he went to bed, my husband looked out at the hummingbird nest and the chicks were gone. This morning I saw Mother flying amongst the ferns in the garden. I will look later today as I won't be home for most of the day today.

Both chicks perched in plants in the garden. Mom is feeding them both. It looks like clutch #1 will be a success. I put up another feeder. When they get better at flying, Mom will teach them how to eat out of the feeders.

I love reading this!
Hi Lisa,
Sorry for the late response. I missed seeing what happened to the chicks due to an emergency operation for Gene. All is well now. Mommy is already feeding the next clutch! I will miss seeing them leave too, probably. Going to Rome in a few weeks. Hope all is well with you.
