Recent cold snap and Carolina Wrens (1 Viewer)

I am very concerned about our local Carolina Wrens here in southwest Pennsylvania. I think this most recent cold snap may have done them in as I have not seen them for days at our feeders.

Just trying to get a feel for where Birdforum members have seen them recently. It may be a few years before they make it back this far north. They are such a charismatic species of bird.

We get a few nights each winter down close to -20 C, with regular stretches of prolonged -10 C and the local Carolina Wren population seems resilient….there may be some die off but these gaps seem quickly filled with newcomers.

FYI - I’m in southern Ontario

I just had two in southwest Ohio yesterday. We got below -5° F one night, and we've many nights below 10° during the cold stretch.

I'd imagine its' not just the cold but also a combination of that and lots of snow, which makes foraging difficult.

Just saw one for the first time in what seems weeks. A nice and loud male. Hopefully, there are more around.

Thanks for all the responses.

I'm in Massachusetts, they're doing fine. In fact yesterday morning I watched a Carolina Wren about 40 feet up, poking around an old squirrel nest in a tree. Temps have been down to single digits, they seem OK. I've heard them calling deeper in the woods a few different times in the last month too.

I have seen a red-tail hawk and Barred Owl several times in the last week, working the wildflower meadow around my house. I think the other birds avoid the area during these times. I haven't seen much of the regulars the last few weeks - White-throated sparrows, titmice, chickadees, juncos. They seem to vacate when the big guys are hanging around, that could be happening on your property too.
