Hello Craig,

There appears to have been a fairly large immigration of RvD's. Reports have been coming in from a wide area in the last week to ten days.

Cheers Harry,

Do you know of any other reports in NW England?? I know there are usually one or two reports per year from Heysham but I havent heard anything from that site so far this year.

Hello Craig,

I haven't heard anything from the NW at all. It seems that many migrants, both lepidoptera and Odonata follow the east coast northwards once they make landfall, hence records of RvD's a week or so ago from Co.Durham.

Obviously not all do so, but it's interesting to note that many resident butterflies and Dragonflies do better and are recorded further north on the east coast than they do and are on the west side of our island.

Most seem to be north east. Below are what I've seen reported (some of these may be duplicate reports - I'm cutting and pasting from various web sites):
Filey: 40 Red Veined Darters all males bar 3- 4 females seen in tandem and ovipositing
12th June, Burton Riggs NR near Scarborough: 20 male Red-veined Darters
13th June, Reighton (between Filey and Flamborough): 2 Red-veined Darters
19 at "a site in North Yorkshire",
3 in "West Yorkshire"
2 "in Worcestershire"
10+ at Burton Riggs NR near Scarborough
5+ at Speeton Ponds near Flamborough
2 at South Gare near Redcar
S. Devon (1 probable),
Co. Durham
" at least 4 sites in Yorkshire"
Up to 15 at Belvide Reservoir, Staffs
Pennington Flash Country Park, Leigh, Lancs SJ636993.
5 at Holme Dunes, Norfolk
2 at Kelling water meadows, Norfolk
Hatchet Pond in the New Forest

Lesser Emperor also recorded
"near Scarborough on 12/6."
Haddiscoe New Cut Norfolk grid ref 435447
Little Bradleys Ponds, Devon
Exminster Marshes,Devon
Burton Riggs NR near Scarborough
Cotswold Water Park , wiltshire

Hi Harassed et al,
Red veined Darters have also made it to Spurn, max count of c30 on Saturday.
The Lesser Emperor "nr Scarborough" on 12th was the same as the one at Burton Riggs. They have also been seen over the weekend at Treeton Dyke (Sheffield) and nr Anglers country park (Wakefield), incidentally at both these latter sites they have been recorded at in the last few years so these may not be migrants.

Hi Craig,

15 Red-veined Darter at Brockholes Quarry, Lancs, on 17th June. It has since emerged that a few 'Red' Darters seen by people prior to this date, and who assumed they were Common Darter, indicate that the species has been present onsite since 11th June. still at least 3 present y/day (23rd) but the weather has been very poor for Dragonfly watching since 17th.

I've also heard of 1 in Rochdale and 7 in the St. Helens area. Like you, I have heard nothing from the Heysham site thus far.

Regards,

Bill Aspin.

There's a photo by Mike Richardson of what looks like a newly-emerged Red-veined Darter on Surfbirds (website down at the moment).

Although their migratory lifestyle means they often fly off soon after emergence, there's obviously a good chance that this was a locally-bred individual bearing in mind this Spring's influx.

Might be worth checking any spot where more than one has been recorded earlier this year.
