Renting a telephoto lens for a birding trip—what should I know? (1 Viewer)

I’m heading out on a birding trip soon and figured it’d be fun to finally try a proper telephoto setup. I’m not a photography person—usually just binoculars and vibes—but I thought, hey, why not see what it’s like to shoot with some real reach? No pressure, just messing around with it.

Locally, the best rental option seems to be a Canon R7 + RF 100-500mm, and for $120 for five days, that doesn’t seem too bad. Never used this kind of setup before, though, so I have no idea what I’m getting myself into. Anything I should know? Like, is this a good choice for someone who’s just experimenting, or is there some “gotcha” I should be aware of?

Not expecting Nat Geo shots or anything, just hoping to have some fun with it. Any advice would be awesome!
