Ridiculous media misidentifications... (1 Viewer)

That's because the 90s are the second worst decade for music, only the 2000s are worse.

Not in every genre, John (that's quite difficult to say...!) - James Macmillan's Cello Concerto (1996) is one of at least 7 major compositions in that decade and is intensely moving.

I admit I haven't heard it. I like a few bits of classical music but I find that a lot of it is as full of boring repetition as modern "dance music" - which is uniformly awful - and worth forgetting.

Obviously I am generalising wildly: a few weeks of listening to Sounds of the Sixties is more than enough to understand that while the decade was full of innovation, brilliant composition and some great lyric writing, there is also a lot of dross, and the same applies to the Seventies.

By the Eighties I already had opinions on music and at the time I disliked New Wave, New Romantics and quite a lot more as I explored mainly the rock genre. Now I am more generous towards the period but that is not least because the subsequent decades provided little but profits for music business people as relentless exploitation of a few formulas utilising few notes and fewer lyrics replaced, with a very few exceptions such as Oasis, Blur and Cold Play, the singer-songwriter and self-contained group.

My mention of the 1990s was actually just meant to imply that University Challenge competitors tend not to do that well on more contemporary topics especially regarding pop culture. I could have said the 2000s or even the 1980s or any other decade from which pop/rock/R&B etc emerged and thrived.

A few series back, there was a question on University Challenge where the answer was (European) Robin and the question began 'Which member of the thrush family...'

I guess in all fairness, it used to be thought they were in the thrush family, before taxonomists decided they were more allied to flycatchers.

Yes, and you would get it if you knew the taxonomic history. It's still quite poor though. A quick look on Wikipedia (or on here) would have sorted it out.

Not a misidentification as such, but equally ridiculous because the person quoted in the story seems convinced that the bird has travelled thousands of miles.

'The black swan is definitely female and I have never seen it before in Worcester.

'It must have veered off course quite a way because they come from Australia but it's a real treat to see her with the city's swans.'

That's remarkable attempt at a new definition of 'veer'...:oops::oops:
