Ring perch feeders? (1 Viewer)

Are those feeding ports with the circular perches worth the extra money?
I.E do the birds actually benefit, and does it allow birds that might not have been able to perch on a traditional feeder to do so?

Thanks
Steve

I use both types of feeder, those with a ring perch and those with the traditioal straight perches. Both feeders attract the same sort of birds and the feeders empty just as quickly as each other. I also notice that whatever the shape you still only get one bird on a perch at a time.

Hi AC/DC
I have tried both types of perch and I have found the birds really don't care. I would agree that the choice of pstion the bird takes up on the ring feeder is more straight on rather than at the side like on the straight perch.

The big hate for me having quite a few feeders to clean is that they are a pain in the butt to dismantle clean and reassemble.....without you going insane. The straight perch wins hands down clearly on this point alone and as regards cost.....a no brainer at the moment.

Cheers, i had noticed the defender's going cheeep, but the new ones are also made of different materials, and Im hoping the chaffinches will find it easier to perch, as they seem to struggle with the traditional perches. Besides, its different for each garden.
Plus i got a free 1kg of sunflower hearts! :eek!::eek!::eek!:

Chaffinches prefer to feed on the ground.

Maybe you need to get away from the coast and take a walk in the woods and watch some.;)

John,
Lol, i wanted them to perch on the feeders so i wouldnt have to keep putting seed out on the ground every morning, and even then the pigeons and squirrels get the seed first!

Cheers nick, I ordered a 6 port defender 2day.

As an update, the feeder has gone down a big success, as have the free seeds.
The more timid birds, such as blue tits, which used to take a seed and zoom off, stay on there for a while munching away, as do the nuthatches. The robin can feed comfortably on the ring perches; it used to really struggle with the traditional ones.
