Sharp-tailed Sandpiper? Bangkok yesterday morning (1 Viewer)

Dear Members and Bird Watchers!

I spotted this bird yesterday and I have ID the bird as an Sharp-tailed Sandpiper.

Why? Because of the down bended bill and the dark browning striped top of the head and darker feathers

I was thinking Broad-billed Sandpiper, but this bird should have a longer bill and it is only the end of the bill going down. And the top of the head should be striped grey. As per my books.

Any other suggestions?

It is very fun, but very frustrating for me with the waders. There were thousands of them in the salt pans yesterday and it is beautiful to see them take off and flying around in huge groups. But very frustrating as there are so many birds that I cannot ID and I have spent most of the day today with my bird books and pictures.

Kind Regards and happy birding

Long-toed stint
Thank you very much!

Quick reply, highly appreciated. So, them my ID of the Broad-billed Sandpiper is wrong as well. I ID the bird in the picture as a Broad-billed Sandpiper because of the down tipped bill and blackish strip through the feathers. Just a black/ dark strip through the feathers.

This is difficult for me because of the angle. Any crown stripe isn't really clear---if indeed it's present. In favour is general shape and pale legs. Against is apparent size: it should be smaller than the plovers but seems much bigger (roughly Knot size). I'm also unclear about wing projection compared with tail; looks like could be wrong. On balance I don't think this is broad-billed (not the impression I get) but happy to be wrong

Thank you THE_FERN!

Hard to come close to get good pictures. It is Sunday tomorrow and I will get back to spend a couple of hours. It is a beautiful area so it is a joy just moving around in the area.

So I hope I can get back home with better pictures. Maybe it is a Knot, but in my book the knot bill is straight

I have attached another picture, on the right hand side are the two bird from previous picture. The left hand picture is the reason for me to ID the bird as Broad-billed Sandpiper.

But I really hope to get better pictures tomorrow.

Appreciated!

For the circled bird I would look at Great Knot as some of them can have quite a droop to the bill at the tip and colour and size wouldn't be at odds with the surrounding birds.
Thank you very much Southern Frogmouth!

Great Knot and Broad-billed Sandpiper are on the same page in my book. The only difference I can see is the bended bill and the Great knot have a black/ very dark tail. Of course, the sun shine can make it hard to see.

Now I realize that it might be due to a generally darker bird so the tail looks to be in the same colour as the Broad-billed Sandpiper in my book. So, you and THE_FERN are correct with the Great Knot and I will change the ID

DARN! Broad-billed Sandpiper was lifer for me, but I will give it a try tomorrow and to get a proper LIFER

Cheers and appreciated

The new picture makes it clear it's not broad-billed sandpiper because the bird which is in profile next to it (left of it) is not. Great knot seems most likely; the apparent size of the bird and bill length perhaps better for that although I can't see black spots on the breast (ebird suggests both great and red knot are there)

These are Great Knot. Compared to Red Knot, note the longer and slightly more downcurved bill, more spots on flanks and darker centres to the upperpart feathers.

Broad-billed Sandpiper is a much smaller bird, similar in size to a stint (so slightly smaller than these sandplovers). The most obvious feature should be the contrasting head pattern and the long bill compared to stints.

Thank you johnallcock!

I will change it to Great Knot in eBird. I will go back today and I really hope I can get closer to the birds for some good pictures.

Appreciated as always!
