Short eared owl (1 Viewer)

They seem to be very scarce this winter so will be a lot trickier than usual. Spurn often has the odd bird and Welwick Saltmarsh nearby is a good spot to try. I usually have the odd record from the garden here in South Yorkshire but haven't managed any records so far this autumn/ winter.

Just had a proper look on RBA and realised there are very few records at all for this January. I would assume though that some sightings are being withheld as often they are disturbed by folks with dodgy fieldcraft and some photographers flushing birds to get close up shots. One of the best sights r.e shorties was watching one plucking away at its prey with its wings out trying to shield its meal when a Kestrel flew in and nicked he food straight out of the owls talons.
