I took a picture of this bird of prey at the end of January this year in Taman Negara. I think it’s a sparrowhawk is it a Japanese sparrow hawk or a European?

I see what you mean but Shikra is seldom seen in Malaysia, especially at TN. You would think Japanese is more likely. It looks like a small accipiter. @Steve.Jonesy Was it calling?

Very hard to tell but seems to have quite dark eyes, Japanese Spar have really, bright yellow eyes, at least adults do?

It's hard to tell but it looks like it might have yellow eyes, or there could be a yellow eye-ring, or both. By the way, adult Japanese has dark eyes, juvenile (which this seems to be) yellow.
