Whilst out today I heard a male Tawny owl calling at about 10.00 this morning, didn't see him though, anyone else come accross them calling in daylight?

Regards Bish. :t:

Have seen and heard Barn Owls in daylight when they are hunting to feed their young.Keep looking.you should spot him.Best wishes,Sulo

I heard one of the Martin Mere tawnies calling in the morning last weekend, and saw one of them roosting in a tree a couple of hours later.

Have regularly seen barn owls at Marshside/Crossens in the afternoons this spring.

Nothing like the short-eared owls though for daytime viewing - my personal record was of seven in sight in flight at Marshside winter 2003/4; other claimed up to eleven.

Hi Sig. I was one of those lucky ones that year.It was an amazing spectacle. Everywhere i looked i could see a shorteared owl.It was one of the best things that i have seen.Obviously a good year for food, voles etc.
I have also heard tawneys calling in the daytime but never seen one in the daytime.

Short eared owls

I have also had some amazing views of short eared's on the Dark Peak the Peak District, my record was 3 in flight, the best views I have had have usually been early evening, they are one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen - gorgeous colours and very impressive to watch hunting. Am i right in thinking they don't call though - never heard any sound from them?

There is also a great spot for little owls a couple of miles away, I have found sitting on a wall or in a tree in one particular field, but never in flight during the day.

It was incredible, wasn't it? That Christmas, my dear old Dad was getting very ill, and he gave me his binoculars, which were old but excellent Zeiss jobs. This was symbolic, as the last time he'd given me his bins, and then just on loan, was 25 years earlier for a trip to the Shetland from which they never returned.

So on Boxing Day I was out on the marsh and raised them to my eyes for the very first time and within five seconds I was looking at two owls. It was incredible.

Since then I've become hooked. The old fella passed away, and the bins have been upgraded and a scope added. But I'll never forget that first moment of looking through "his" eyes.

Heard one yesterday afternoon. Fascinating! Couldn't see the owl but I reckon I was very close to it.

Also Jay's are very good Tawny Owl mimics certainly around this Neck of the Woods, and many day time calling Tawnies around here turn out to be Jays, regards Bri.
