Tilley Hats.. Comments please (1 Viewer)

My wife just bought me a Tilley. Tilley is a Canadian chap apparently. I've been wearing a fake Tilley for years. It looks pretty rough and I've had to keep it dirty on purpose because it's white. I too am a little concerned about the tourist/LLBean look. But the famous hat eating elephant lives right near where I work, and I plan to feed my new tilley to the elephant to take some of the tourist out of it (the hat that is). Apparently the hat was first designed as a sailor's hat for shedding water and sun without falling of in a wind. Mine was $60. My wife got it in Cobourg Ontario (not too far from you Egret3) and it comes in white (yuk) and olive kaki (mine).

i now a man in norfolk who wears a tricorn, you now like wellington's.it has a pouch at the back for storage of stinkhorns, crab bait and hobnobs.he also never leaves home without his spair churchwardens and a stoneware pot of cockle and mullet sandwich spread which he keeps consealed inside his fannypack.he's quite a funny chap but if you see him loitering in a darkened corner of a norfolk turnip field steer clear of his dog for god's sake, goodluck off to find some more of those funny little mushrooms ha ha ha ha

Hi Scott:

Ah... okay.. Well, off white is nicer..
and I admit.. right now with this heat
they are too hot for me.. wow..
Khaki .. good camouflage.. is it not? It would look good in that
tea room of yours in Cobourg.. forget the name.. very nice there
though..

.. re: the cowboy hat.. well, so what
what is wrong with a cowboy hat
I like them as well.

and as for the last poster
Think you have had a few of those mushrooms :)) You people
here have a good sense of humour, much needed.

I love my Tilley. The straps don't get in the way if you tuck them inside the hat when not used, but they are a godsend in windy conditions. My only disappointment is the way that, after 6 years of wear my sweaty, bald head has stained the white fabric yellow.

Dear Eanna,

Attached is a photo of my new Tilley hat, complete with handsome bloke in it!

Umm, this thread made me go out and buy this new one, the flag tells you where it is now - if you haven't got one, you'll never know how good they are!

Mike
PS got this one from Blacks, in Sheffield.

I can see the point of these hats in Angola and other places where shelter from the sun is essential. The wide brim would also allow ample room for the suspension of corks to keep the flies away.

But

In the UK - No. They are not needed to keep out our bland weather and ordinary people already think we look a bunch of nobs without us confirming their view.

Just my opinion, like. ;)

If you really want to get the nob factor get one of their Airflo tilleys. The original is better. By the way Tilley also do a tweed teflon coated hat complete with ear warmers for the cooler climates, since they come from Canada I guess they know what there talking about.

Tilleys are good for those of us with big heads whereby you can order up to size 8 and beyond which is way beyond most peoples XXL.

I'm sorry David but I think somethings being lost in the translation and it's all my fault! Correct me if I'm wrong. .... Please.

I've used the word nob, which I think you have taken to mean "nob" as in the posh, landed gentry definition. I should have used the word "knob" in the context of that sentence - a word with the same sound but an entirely different meaning (sometimes ;) ), but I was seeking to avoid certain sensitivities.

What I meant to say was that the general public think that we dress and act like a bunch of *****s, anyway, so why confirm their view with even more inappropriate (for the conditions) attire.

Sorry for the confusion.

And before anyone comes on accusing me of being elitist, there's nobody gets dressed as a bigger knob than me when I'm out. |:d|

No I understood your original intention with the "k". Having lived in both sides of the Atlantic I'm fully conversant in both vernaculars. Although since I left one that makes me laugh is dogs boll**** had to ask the first time i heard that one. Then there was my niece punctuating everything with "wicked".
I figure that I'm out there anyway with the bins etc and the anorak or in the case of southern California, shorts and sandals so I pretty much look the part anyway whether I've got the Tilley or not. But living here I do appreciate the sun protection it provides and the sizing that they do, theres nothing worse than birding the Salton Sea, regularly 110 in the summer with a hat thats too tightly fitting. You can feel the blood throbbing thru your head, quick recipe for a headache or worse at that temp. They do say its a dry heat though so thats alright. Still thank god I'm not stuck in Basra in a flak jacket I bet that gets hot.

Hi all new to the forums, but been lurking for several days. I have had a Tilley hat for over 10yrs. Best hat I ever owned. Keeps the sun off my head, face and neck. On rainy days it also keeps your head dry. If you wear glasses it keeps the rain off those as well. My first was a T3 white(only light color at the time if memory serves me). When I saw Khaki I got one due to the white scaring off wildlife. When I saw a light weight model in Khaki that was the best yet. Now I keep one in the car all the time. Yes they are great for birding, but I have found when wearing it at a birding sites people seem to think I work for there. I bought in both US and Canada, surprising at the time they were the sold at the same price, but with a good $exchage rate the Canadian purchase was considerably less costly.

Read their website - within the first paragraph of telling the "tale" of the hat he squawks about he was yachting in Belize and blah blah blah.

Effete prats need to feel the pain when they spend their money so they buy cotton hats that look like your typical cowboy hat only with bizarre proportions and 20 times more expensive.

It has nothing to do with whether you are a serious birder or not.

It has everything to do with whether you are the sort to spend nearly a hundred bucks for a cotton hat and then pretend it is the heirloom the website tries to trick you into thinking it is.

Just think Whole Earth foods - where else can you pay $6 for a small can of chilli?

It is hilarious but sad at the same time.

If an outdoors store like Blacks in the UK sells these hats, then there is a market for them.

I dont see a need to start calling people names; I think you might find the majority of the civilised world find wearing cowboy hats somewhat quaint.

Suggest we keep this thread lighthearted, which is what it was surely meant to be.

I agree 100%! That is why I didn't. I merely stated that effete prats need to feel the pain when spending money. Something that you couldn't possibly disagree with. I never said that anyone that purchased a $100 piece of cotton shaped like a hat was an effete prat. Did I? I mean, I re-read it as I trust your judgement but, for the life of me, couldn't find any place where I called anyone names.

Of course! Ditto for any hat with a wide brim and wannabe jaunty little straplet at the back. I'm glad you agree with me.

Absolutely! You have already brought me great mirth and laughter - I can't think of a more lighthearted thread!

When I saw the smiley he used on his post, I assumed the entire thread would be light-hearted. I am sorry that my "effete snob" lighthearted bashing touched a personal nerve :(

Please continue to enjoy this forum and forgive me if I caused you any distress.

And throw away your Tilliy before it corrupts your brain for good!

As "any publicity is good publicity as long as the name is spelled correctly," I am sure that this thread benefits Tilly immensely.

Happy bird watching,

I have got to get a Tilley Hat-Wear it when I am not wearing my Leopard-skin Pillbox. "Effete prats"-what I aspire to.

Stay Safe

:D LOL!

You are brave for telling us what you parade around in! I wear a $500 baseball hat so that I can feel like I am actually spending money rather than buying a hat. I also wear a piece of styrofoam on my head. Why? It is lightwight, water resistent and it floats! WOW!!!!! All of those things Tilliy (I will never spell it the way the evil genius at that hat company wants it spelled) hat sycophants rave about and you can get it free!!!!

What I actually parade around in is a canvas hat I puchased at Cabelas.

It is a wide brimmed hat. I wear glasses, most of the flare or reflections I get are not from my binoculars but sunlight from behind reflecting off the inside of my glasses.

When it is cloudy or rainy I usually wear a baseball cap. I am pretty slow but I finally figured out a way to bird while holding an umbrella.

I find this whole thread frankly a little weird.

Stay safe

Mike
