tips to correct misshaped rubber eyecups? (3 Viewers)

Hello,

I have a pair of nikon SE porros with rubber, flip-down eyecups that are misshaped, probably from resting in a weird position for years in a box.

I tried heating them up with boiling water and replacing them, flipping them down to cool, and this helped a bit but I'm out of ideas.

Searching the forums and the net more broadly mostly leads to advice about reconditioning the rubber (not my issue) or suggests replacing with cheap third party versions on amazon. I also see a number of comments about how Nikon won't send replacements if asked. Surely, there is a hack that others have worked out to reshape the rubber?

Thanks.

Don't send them in to Nikon for replacement. They no longer source the eyecups, and will replace your SEs with MHGs unless you specify a return of the original product. At least, that was my experience.

I doubt rubber eyecups can truly be brought back into shape, but if I remember right, there have been some posts stating that the rubber eyecups for the Nikon EII series will fit. That might be your best option, definitely if you're using them with glasses/spectacles - although if you're using them with eyecups turned up, the EII eyecups might be too short for the SE's notoriously over-long eye relief. In the latter use case, third party eyecups are probably the best solution.

@ Dr. K.
You probably already did this, but in case you didn't try storing them for a few weeks with the cups flipped down. It worked (acceptably, not perfectly) on an old pair of Trinovid 7x35Bs I had.
Good luck.
