Planning on going to Auckland, New Zealand at the start of August for a week, not planning on going to any nature reserves but was wondering what birds I can expect to see, and therefore need to read up on.

TIA

You really should make time to head north and see some fantastic parks, though winter is not ideal. In city parks you can see tui, mistle thrush, fantails, not much else. Coastal birds: gulls, cormorant, oystercatcher, sandpipers all can be found within city limits.

I found e-bird to be wildly inaccurate when I was in New Zealand in 2019 - it may have improved. Auckland is a fabulous city and as nartreb says, lots of opportunities to bird in parks, etc.
Enjoy your trip.

it might be worth asking on this forum
I found it friendly and helpful

Hi there.
Auckland is full of Tui and gulls.

However, if you are willing to move around you will be able to see a lot more!
Shakespear regional park in Auckland has Bell Birds, Wood pidgeons, NZ Robbins, Kakariki, Saddlebacks, Banded rails, and Spotless Crakes, NZ Dotteres, Oyster catchers, white faced herons and reef herons.

In the west there is the Waitakere ranges, very wild and large bit of bush. We have all the above plus Stitch Birds, Tomtits, and Kokako.

Further north there is Tawharanui Regional Park, which is also a great birding site.

Good luck and I hope you have fun 😀

You could have a look in the Opus section for New Zealand: Category:New Zealand - BirdForum Opus

This will help you look through the Gallery for birds seen there, so you can get used to their looks.... just click on the yellow search bar. You could also home in on the different parts of the New Zealand areas if you think you will be near them, and again you will find a Gallery search bar at the bottom of each page.

Hope you see at least one Tui... my favourite LOL
