Unusual bird species of their Families (1 Viewer)

Pale Rockfinch is apparently very divergent from other Old World sparrows, I believe a recent study suggested it belonged with wagtails and pipits?

How about Rock Nuthatches, with the odd mud-cone nest stuck to a cliff face? Other nuthatches use tree cavities.

Probably not an extreme one, but Tuamotu Sandpiper is a bit odd

I think a few of these are in the chopping block to be split into their own families in the future. So better species to call out can't be found!

• Great Argus (too much even by pheasant standards)
• Capuchinbird (can't see any cotinga similar to it)
• Fernandina's Flicker (woodpecker that forages almost exclusively on the ground and does not construct it's own nest, instead takes it from West Indian Woodpecker)
