Breeding distribution maps for the 2 species, Icterine in steep decline, 66% between 2001 and 2013 according to the Atlas des Oiseaux de France.

That's an impressive decline. But, I am just curious how they're distinguished, appart from geography.

When I was in the Netherlands this spring, I saw some Warblers, that I could identify as Icterine. When I was in the Allier a month later, I saw a Warbler that I considered identical. Only when consulting Collins I realized it was Melodious.
