I watched a bird today in my backyard waterfall taking a bath. It was was the size of a thrush with a semi-long flat tail, had a golden redish ring around it's neck, with a little red spot on back of head.

Welcome to BF!

Sorry I can't help answer but if you post this in the

"Bird Identification Q&A"

section just below this one you should get more answers as that's were everyone posts these type of questions.

Hope this helps

Hi, drscherrey! A warm welcome to you from all of us on staff here at BirdForum!

Afraid I can't help you with your ID, either, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly who can. As Tim said, the Bird ID Q&A forum is your best bet. Lots of knowledgeable and friendly help over there who love a challenge! :t:

Welcome to Birdforum, drscherrey. The red spot on the back of the head suggests that your bird might have been one of your woodpeckers - perhaps a Downy or a Hairy Woodpecker (very similar and difficult to tell apart) or possibly a Northern Flicker - but without some more detail it's going to be difficult to pin it down more than that. What other colours did you note? Where did you see it (in a tree? on the ground?) and what was it doing?
