What other hobbies do birders have? (1 Viewer)

I happened to read on a thread today that a BF member is a plane spotter and likes ticking them off. What other hobbies do you have that are similar to birding or at the other end of the scale like one of mine - watching motorsport.

Hi,
Interesting question...i suppose most birders tend to gravitate towards similar list based hobbies..perhaps moths or plants etc..
Mine is Hard Core and Death Metal....couldn't be more opposite....or could they? We'll see if anyone beats that.

Regards Richard.

painting/drawing, reading, gardening

(fortunately two of those can combine very easily with an interest in birding - the reading's for when it's dark!)

Painting and drawing, definitely. Foreign languages. Reading when I get time. Karaoke (very badly). Consuming unfine wines in fine quantities. Sitcom writing. Knitting.

Having been dangerously obsessed with birding for a couple of years I am showing interest again in my previous main hobbies. I actually got into briding when a serious injury ended all my sporting hobbies for some time, and although I can't ever play football or cricket again, I have had a few rounds of golf and a few games of tennis lately. TBH, though, neither is likely to displace my passion for birding now, and all my other interests are related in general to nature/wildlife/the environment.

Otherwise I read, mostly getting the science education I should have got when younger, and am studying philosophy part-time (an MA in "Values and the Environment")

I practised martial arts for about twenty five years. Most of the training was in the evenings so it didn't affect my birding much although I do recall missing competing in a tournament once to see a Long-billed Dowitcher.

Scuba Diving - while other people are in the water i scan for sea birds.

Astronomy - Another good use for binoculars.

Oh my, this thread could get very interesting ...;)
I thought Nick's Sitcom writing was the most interesting so far. Do tell us more Nick.

I have many other interests - but all of them don't add up time & brain-consuming wise to birding.
Obviously other wildlife - butterflies, dragonflies, mammals...
But also literature & writing, the arts, travel, philosophy, used to do a lot of gardening too, but just keeping the garden looking OK is enough...lots of other interests but not what I'd call hobbies.

I used to spend all my spare time gardening....for years and years.....and reading about it. But I hardly do any now that birding has taken over.....just gardening enough to stop it going wild now.

Cooking, remodeling/restoring my 1912 Farmhouse, good wine (yes, that's a hobby), and collecting Fossils, objects of natural history, fountain pens, and timepieces.

Again, my other hobbies are related to Birding- reptiles, mammals and wildlife travel. In the past I kept and bred reptiles and amphibians although I much prefer seeing them in the wild now.

Astronomy, swimming, reading, photography (but birds, mainly, so maybe doesn't count!), travel, drawing & painting, spending too much time on the net, listening to rock and metal music and (for my sins) following Southampton Football Club.
I used to surf, but gave that up due to dodgy knees.

Astronomy, archery, martial arts, photography, sea-angling, fly tying.
Thinking of trying Olde English cookery. Just been watching the blackbirds eat my blue berry's and then start on the red currents. Where is the recipe that calls for Four and Twenty Blackbirds:eek!::eek!::eek!:
