What to take: portable scope or thermal imager scope for steppes species (1 Viewer)

I am going on a few days birding trip to Extremadura in a couple of weeks where, among others, I will be targetting steppes species: bustards, sandgrouse, stone curlew, etc...
My plan was to take a portable mid/small spotting scope (60mm), however, I am wondering if for those species a thermal imager would not be a better idea for detection, and then use my binoculars and Nikon P1000 for id/photography.

It is unlikely I will manage to fit both given luggage restrictions.

Thoughts?
