Where can I see Nightingales in Suffolk? (1 Viewer)

Hello All,

I've been living in Suffolk for nearly twenty years now. I remarked to one of my colleagues at work that I've never heard a nightingale sing and I would love to hear one. He reccommended that we visit Newbourne Springs nature reserve which is near us.

Since the weather was wonderful yesterday and I had a day off we drove to Newbourne Springs in the late afternoon. We enjoyed walking through the reserve and hearing the song thrushes and blackbirds. I've never heard so many chiffchaffs. We came across a lady who was apparently working for the BTO and we asked her about nightingales. She said there was a pair on the heath and we might hear them. We left sadly without spotting one.

Where is the best place to hear nightingales not too far from the Ipswich area? I realise it's late in the season for nightingales but I'm hoping we may still be able to hear one.

Thank you,

Ivy

Assuming things haven't changed completely since moving from South Suffolk a few years ago, the obvious place to try is Wolves Wood - the RSPB reserve near Hadleigh. Google RSPB/Wolves Wood for details. Always used to hear good numbers here & should still be singing. Best early morning or late evening & I seem to remember mosi repellant well advised!

Of course hearing & seeing nightingales are 2 different things ... over the years I've found one of the best places to see them is when the males drop in to the bushes near north wall at Minsmere - but too late for this year.

Good luck!
