Wilkinson's fat balls UK (1 Viewer)

I bought a tub of 50 fat balls today from the Wilkinsons store in Halifax for £5.99.
They were also selling tubs of 35 for £5.
They are still in nylon netting but the price is very competive - roughly half the price of RSPB equivalent. With regard to quality the local birds seem very happy I am refilling an RSPB large fatball holder every 2 days with say 7 fatballs.
On a more general note they seem to be expanding their product range of wild bird food some featuring Bill Oddie - worth checking prices if you have a store handy.

I must have a look in our local Wilko. The birds are going mad for fat balls and peanuts at the moment. Lidl is good for the peanuts.

Thanks for the tip Robert. I have just bought a tub of 50 from my local store to try. Hopefully my birds will like them so that I can be a bit more generous with them than the ones which I have been using.

Home and Bargain are also doing 50 fat balls for about £5 - no nets either. They seem to be fine - the sparrows make short work of them in my garden.

Poundland are selling 8 fat balls from national trust for £1.00.Birds are loving them so going to buy more if they still have them this week. Will try B&M too! Cant merit paying a fortune for them if these are as good quality !!

I find wilcos very good for a lot of bird the foods I get, its the chepest for niger seed round were I live, I use fat balls as well as some of the other bird seed in the range they have wish they would do black sun flower seed rather than striped ones though and would like to see meal worms packed in bags instead of plastic tubs.

is it possible that the reason that they are so cheap is that they are not as good as the rspb ones i dont no about fatballls but whenever i buy cheap seed its full of wheat which the birds dont seem to like. is there a danger especially in cold weather that your birds will fill themselves up on food that is nutritionally poor
the rspb ones are more expensive but they are nutrionally good and also the money does go to a good cause.
cheers

Hi Paul, you may have a good point there have checked the fat ball feeder tray on the bottom of the feeder today and there is a small amount of 'crumb/seed ' which I don't see much of on the RSPB buggy fat balls so will use those in the cold winter months. The national trust ones are fine for this time of year as the birds eat a varied diet including RSPB buggy nibbles etc!! Gone are the days of just putting peanuts and seed out! They have quite a gourmet diet including sunflower hearts, peanut granules buggy suet nibbles, and loads of different seed mixtures etc!!!! My husband jokes they are better fed than him! Especially when I soak raisins for them over night!!! Well at least we are doing our 'bit' for the birds all of us on this forum aren't we? kind regards Bev.

I've been using the Wilkinson balls for ages and they always go completely and often are taken very quickly! I've tried crumbling one up onto a tray and came back to find even the tiniest crumbs had been cleaned up so the birds here certainly love them. :t:

I agree about the cheap seed though, some can be really dusty and full of stuff that just gets chucked out of the feeders.

Today I put out some crumbs and bits of fat ball in a dish on the ground as there is more wheat type seed in these from pound land than the usual RSPB or Chapelwood ones I normally use! Anyway didn't hold much hope out that the dish would even stay there in the gale force wind today but in fact the male pheasant who resides here polished the lot off!! Must be due to the higher wheat content or maybe he was stuffing himself as the weather forecast is bad for the next couple of days. The birds have been going mad eating today hanging on to feeders in this wind!! They looked quite acrobatic on them and even the ground feeding birds were having their feathers ruffled. Mind you they don't seemed to have been buzzed by the young sparrow hawk today , must be too windy for him to stay on course!
