wren like (1 Viewer)

Seen for the last few weeks in a hegde on open farmland

Very similar in size, shape, and colour to a wren but has vivid silver greg rear edge to its wings.

Flight is rapid and irrattic not moving very far when disturbed, has often been seen on a raised bank which has long grasses beneath a rather thin hedge.

It can only be a wren, really - there are no other birds that much like a wren in Europe - so presumably it's just a wren with slightly aberrent plumage.

Only if it looks nothing like a wren, Treets - seriously, if what you saw was as much like a wren as you suggest, there's nothing else.

Even a goldcrest - which is great size-wise - isn't "like" a wren at all.

Does the bird you see have the typical cocked tail of wren?

Keith

I've only ever managed to see it when I 've driven past the same stretch of hedge in the truck.

So couldn't say, the most striking thing is these silver grey bars on the rear of the wings.

Hi there Treets,

okey-dokey... if the pale wing bar is the most notable feature then you might well be looking at linnet after all - the wing bar is a very effective diagnostic feature for linnet, because twite (which is otherwise similar) doesn't have it.

Have a delve through the Gallery - there are plenty of linnet and twite (and wren!) pictures in there - and you might well see an example of your bird.

If we're moving away from it being particularly wren-like (which is fine, of course), then I think linnet is looking good.
