Yorkshire Birding (22 Viewers)

Hi melodious thanks for all the help. Looks like showers on Wednesday afternoon anyway. Not a good day for Long Legged Buzzards?

This suggests it would not be a wise idea;

Sounds pretty grim. You will on the more sheltered side of the Peaks and not at the very tops but with a limited time window you are chancing it it terms of a prolonged shower or period of poor visibility. Hopefully they will around for a while and you will have a chance to pick another day.

They were much closer to home and I daresay work when near Oldham a month ago but I missed them. I actually missed one by a minute even. One has crossed over into Cumbria today. I cant see more crossing into the north-west soon the weather is coming in from the Atlantic. I am hoping for some cold easterly weather to push them west. There is all winter still I know but this my best chance. Will keep a close eye on the weather. I have never seen this website before. I tend to use the metoffice more. I is good. Thanks for your help. If the weather turns bad the road could close as well.

Di not manage to make it sadly, left work at 2.30 so was too late and too stormy when I got up there. Will be worth going there at some point in the near future. Were these the same birds seen in Greater Manchester?

Never mind, I suspect there will be quite a few scattered around northern England for an extended period until they start leaving for Scandinavia during late March to early May (though unfortunately I think its likely some on grouse moors will get killed by gamekeepers. See link below; p.18-20 is referring precisely to the area we are discussing). I haven't been following the situation away from Sheffield closely I'm afraid so not sure how the Manchester birds tie-in.

Hi there, not sure how close you are to the North Yorkshire Moors, but up to 4 have been seen at Sleddale, which is around a mile from the village of Kildale, you may know the area. The birds are almost a cert on any giving day if you put the time and effort in. Always a good area for raptors and a WTSE graced the skies there a few months back, so anything is possible.
Hope this helps pal.

Damian

That was the pic but for some reason I couldn't copy or link it. I suppose it would have wound up a few of your opponents so the subtle approach was probably the best option.

I was delighted to see a male blackcap on my feeders this morning - is this unusual for this time of year?

A few Blackcaps overwinter every year. Ringing recoveries show these are largely German birds. They nip back ahead of the ones which went to Africa & attempt to take the best habitat. Think German holidaymakers & their alleged towels on sunbeds - same basic principle ;-). No offence to German holidaymakers

YWT & Spurn

YWT Have today announced on Birdguides details of their horrendous (I think so anyway) plans for a new double story with new car park visitor centre which will be sited immediately adjacent to the very (& I'll use YWT language) fragile SSSI, SPA & SAC site of Spurn National Nature Reserve. I emphasise the National Nature reserve part... not country park, not fossil hunting park... not fun run park.... National Nature Reserve.

Anyway - not all of you may have the same objections that I have - some may welcome it. Indeed many would feel less objectionable if it was in a much more suitable site...

Please please please can birders voice their opinion on the Birdguides article - there are some very real consequences for Spurn & its local community here & in particularly birding habitat & bird welfare.

Any of you that are opposed & on facebook can find some detail & will find new bits of info on the facebook page

Already voiced my objections, apparently the guy in charge of YWT is an ex banker or the like and doesn't care what a few birders think it's all about how much they can make.Might have to cancel my membership to the YWT if it goes ahead.

Dave I think there was a typo in your post - you need to substitute a W for one of the B's...... I'll let you work out which one.
I too have raised my objections.
