Yorkshire Birding (33 Viewers)

The bird was showing nicely when I watched it at 07.15, the light was good then as the sun was well over to the East, not straight in your face. Stopped off, got the bird and back driving to work inside 15 minutes. Nice easy twitch, gimme more of these.:-O

Blimey, efficient! Yeah, the sun was "problematic" - I actually got rather sunburnt. Fortunately it showed best when the light was best towards the end.

Here's a terrible pic of it...

There's definitely an autumnal feel to the year now.I've been at Harewood for the last two days(marshalling the hillclimb) without the bins, but a quick stroll yesterday gave good views of the kites and buzzards, and this afternoon ,something disturbed a barn owl which was very vocal about it!Best of all for me ,though were the large skeins of greylags flying off westwards this morning and returning at sunset.

Hotting up at the LDV

SEO,barn owl,
marsh harrier,buzzard,goldfinch,kestrel,linnett,snipe,cormorant,lbbg,pink footed geese,gsw,sparrow hawk,long tailed tit,great tit,dunnock,blue tit,robin,golden plover,magpie,grey lags,mutes,swallows,hobby,and all the usual common stuff,

not bad for a couple of hours birding.

final scores from Spurn include a minimum of 11 Yellow Brows, 2 RB Fly's, RB Shrike, Rosefinch, reported Barred, Corncrake, plus decent stuff over the sea which included a possible Fea's type. Not sure what the day record is for YBW, anyone know? Saying that, some of the 11 were outside of the old obs boundary so hard for a comparison.

A great day out at Spurn today with some excellent sightings (two lifers for me in the shape of long-tailed skua and leach's storm petrel). As always, I am very grateful to the experienced sea-watchers who were on hand to help out with id assistance.

Ldv

The air was thick with hirundines today and huge flocks of finches mainly gold mixed with linnets, lots of bird activity across the valley geese, mallards and swans very active good raptor count but the owls are few and far between SEO,Barn and tawny showing well but low numbers. Stacks of gulls and cormorants moving up and down the valley and GSW active late on.

its all bubbling nicely :t:

Hi Mark, there have been four counts higher than yesterdays totals the record being 19 + 5 north of old obs recording area totalling 24 on the day (6th October 2005)

Hi Bedrick, welcome to a very soggy Yorkshire BF. The remains of hurricane Nadine has given some places more than a month's rain in the last 24 hours.

Hi Bedrik, welcome to the best thread on BF.... okay I'm biased. I'll second Ken saying we are soggy at the moment.

I had to laugh on my way to work some idiot thought he'd be able to drive through 200 yards of flooded road in an small car, he made about 15 yards before stalling. Can't beat the Castleford flood defences for catching out twits.
