By any chance...Does anyone have one of these eyepieces that they would like to rehome?

I have just acquired a Diascope 65 TFL with the 25-56x zoom but would love a wide angle 30x. I am new to Zeiss scopes, but for me 30x is the ideal as a contrast to the zoom, but would the 23x be equally recommended? I cannot for the life of me find any of the 30/40x pieces available online, so if any one knows where I could source one, that would be wonderful!

Hi Laurence,
My dealer near Bonn has remaining stock of a 30/40x eyepiece for €249 Angebote (scroll down).
I don't know if he would ship to Oz or whether you would face any import charges, but if you are interested and need any help (e.g. a phone call), let me know.
I had a 65 TFL some years ago and used the 23x eyepiece. It had a very easy view but was a bit yellowish and, IIRC, had a little loss of off-axis sharpness.

Thanks to John, I have now sourced a 30x B WW e/p which will soon be winging it's way to me...and my new diascope :)

Just an update, the 30x eyepiece arrived here in Perth this morning and is in amazing, perfect condition (as new?). Eye relief is excellent and the image is pin sharp and bright. Thanks for pointing me in the direction of Ehlert&Partner, I can highly recommend them for great service. :)

I had assumed it was NOS anyway.

Yes, to be honest I had sort of assumed it was an old ex-demo unit but I didn't give it a lot of thought when I ordered, I was just happy to get my hands on a copy. It clearly is 'new' but I imagine these haven't been made for quite some time now.

The diascope 65/30x combo is amazing and I have owned Leicas 62/65, Kowa 883s, ATS 80s and Nikon ED82s etc over the years. I spent a good hour in my local park watching the now fledged osprey being fed by the female and it was a real treat, I could have stayed all afternoon. Even with the heat degradation, the image was excellent and I can't understand why these scopes were never as popular as the smaller Swaros and Leicas 20 years ago. I know I was slightly prejudiced against them also back then...maybe the reported loss of edge sharpness or color balance/yellow bias?

I'm a happy camper and for just $800 (with the 15-56x)!

Laurence,
There's a widespread assumption that newer is better but I think the advances in the poast 20 or 30 years can be summed up in marginal anti-reflection coating improvements and the introduction of wide-angle zoom eyepieces.
Hermann here on the forum has a selection of old Nikon Fieldscopes and jring an excellent old Kowa TSN-3 and no-one could persuade me to part with my 14 year-old ATM65 HD.

What's more important than the age of the scope is that you manage to find a cherry. There are too many mediocre scopes about, and quite a few lemons. Laurence found a cherry, it seems.

BTW, athough I'm still happy with my old (some might say ancient") Nikon Fieldscopes I'd very much like to have a zoom eyepiece that has got a wider FOV than the Nikon zooms and works better with glasses. Switching between different fixed eyepieces is often a bit of a hassle.

Hermann

I'd like to buy one of these eyepieces too. How did you go about ordering it and paying for it? I'm in the USA.

Does this eyepiece have the locking feature for the second generation Diascope?

I found one. I went to the Space Coast Birding Festival here in Cape Canaveral and the Zeiss rep found one in their warehouse. It's brand new. It does have the locking mechanism for the second generation Diascope.
