Zeiss Terra hinge adjustment (1 Viewer)

The guide might need to send it in for repair, which likely will be free. Conversely, an attempted home repair may void the warranty.

That is a common problem with that model. No fix that you can do, just send it back to Zeiss, they will send
you a new one. I think they have it figured out now.

She’s in Guatemala and sending to Zeiss is not an option, for multiple reasons. Not least of which, she needs bins for her job.

Interesting…. And sucks. I had hoped under the tripod stud insert, there’d be a simple friction adjustment.

Yes, I had seen this but no photo and @Acorndrive ’s description did not match her bins. Her dust cap fell off and all that’s visible now is the threaded insert. Thus my quez …

From other thread:
OK, here's the solution to the problem. It occurred to me that the larger Terra Eds support a 1/4 inch tripod adapter. This means the hinge cap at the objective end of things must be removable. A quick mail to Zeiss tech support confirmed this, but also confirmed that removing the cap (it screws off) can be tricky as there is very little surface area to gain traction. Also you have push hard on the cap in addition to twisting. They recommended using a rubber glove. After a half hours difficulty I succeeded in removing the cap.
Underneath, the hinge bolt is exposed together with a tightening nut (oddly designed in a cross formation) which needs to be tightened. You cannot use a normal Philips or flat head screwdriver to do this, unless you have a 1/2 inch screwdriver head.
Lacking the correct tool I applied alternate pressure to each slot using a large flat head driver, working around the nut very carefully. This worked.

Of course Gary is right, it should be sent to Zeiss. A local guide in rural Guatemala has less than ideal resources however, so if DIY repair was feasible, that seemed like a good option. She’ll just keep using them as is until she can afford an 8x30sfl - she loved my wife’s (she has to hump older, heavy tripod and scope on steep trails. I’m hoping I can find a used pair of SFLs and send them down with friends in March ;-)
