Identification
22 cm. Green body, brown head, nape and throat, yellow underwing, brownish-green tail, white bill with black tip, grey-yellow iris, dark grey legs.
Distribution
South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, Zululand, Zimbabwe, Mali, islands of Zanzibar and Pemba.
Taxonomy
Poicephalus cryptoxanthus has two 2 subspecies:[1]
- P. c. tanganyikae
- South-eastern Kenya to Malawi, northern Mozambique, Zanzibar and Pemba Island
- P. c. cryptoxanthus
- South-eastern Zimbabwe and southern Mozambique to north-eastern South Africa
Habitat
Savanna, open woodland and riverine forest.
Behaviour
The diet includes seeds, nuts, berries, flowers and nectar.
They nest in a tree cavity and 2-4 glossy white eggs are laid, 3 days apart; incubation lasts 28 days.
