Identification
26.5 cm
- Reddish-purple plumage, browner on the belly
- Olive-brown upperparts
- Tail and primary flight feathers are darker olive-brown than the rest of the bird
- Black bill
- Reddish-purple legs and eyes
Female: slightly duller and browner than the male
Juvenile
- Greyish brown head, neck and breast
- Cinnamon scaling on the head and upperparts.
Distribution
Central and South America:
Central America: south-eastern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: north-western Colombia
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
American members of what used to be genus Columba are now in genus Patagioenas.
Habitat
Lowland rainforests; canopy and semi-open woodland.
Behaviour
Breeding
A single white egg is laid into a basic platform nest formed from twigs and placed 5-30 m up in a tree or amongst vines.
Diet
The diet includes mistletoe, fruits and berries, or small invertebrates.
