Identification
23–25 cm (9-9¾ in)
Male
- Green head, upper breast and back
- Black throat and face
- Yellow bill
- Pale blue eye-ring
- Yellow belly
- White undertail, barred black
- Black and white wing coverts
Female
- Brown head, upper breast and back
- Rufous upper tail
- Yellow belly
- Mostly yellow bill
- Pale eye-ring wider behind and in front of the eye
Variation
It is possible to find males of this species with yellow eye-ring
Distribution
Central and South America
Central America: Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Argentina
Taxonomy
Black-throated Trogon was in 2024 split into four species:
- Northern Black-throated Trogon - Tropical south-eastern Honduras to extreme north-western Colombia
- Choco Black-throated Trogon - Tropical western Colombia and western Ecuador
- Amazonian Black-throated Trogon - Amazonian South America from eastern Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru to Amazonian Venezuela and the Guianas, as well as to Amazonian Brazil
- Atlantic Black-throated Trogon - northeastern Brazil to Paraguay and northeastern Argentina

Habitat
Lowland humid neotropical forest, Atlantic slope forest and neotropical mature wet lowlands.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of arthropods and fruit, though they may eat less fruit than other similar trogons.
Breeding
The nest is an unlined shallow cavity, and 2 white eggs are laid.
Vocalisation
Call: krrrrrr
