Identification
48-50 Brownish-black plumage, with long, bristly throat feathers; the feet, legs and bill are black. The species is now extinct in the wild, and only survives in captive breeding programs.
Distribution
Endemic to Hawaii. On the brink of extinction.

This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Montane forests
Behaviour
The diet includes carrion, eggs and nestlings, other small creatures, fruits, and even human food and scraps.
Nests are built in tree creepers, 5 eggs are laid and are incubated by both parents.
