Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Monarcha.

Subspecies

There are 9 subspecies[1]:

  • C. c. aurantiacus: Northern New Guinea (Geelvink to Astrolabe Bay and Ramu River)
  • C. c. melanonotus : North-western New Guinea and western Papuan islands
  • C. c. kordensis: Biak and Misool islands (New Guinea)
  • C. c. nitidus: Eastern and south-eastern New Guinea and Louisiade Archipelago
  • C. c. aruensis: Southern New Guinea and Aru Islands
  • C. c. pulcherrimus: Dyaul I. (Bismarck Archipelago)
  • C. c. chrysomela: Bismarck Archipelago (New Hanover and New Ireland)
  • C. c. whitneyorum: Lihir Group (Bismarck Archipelago)
  • C. c. tabarensis: Tabar Group (Bismarck Archipelago)

Forest edges and clearings.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet includes small invertebrates, including grasshoppers.
