Identification

12-13.5 cm. Black above and white below, with a white half-collar, large white wing patch, white tail sides and a large white forehead patch, pale grey rump, broad black bill with a pointed shape.

Distribution

Southeastern Europe, the Middle East and southwestern Asia, wintering in Africa.

Taxonomy

Habitat

Mountainous areas of deciduous woodland, especially oak and hornbeam.

Behaviour

An open nest is built in a tree hole and 4-7 eggs are laid.

The diet includes insects caught in flight.
