Identification

17cm. Maroon-brown above, pale rump, white underparts, buff flanks, grey crown and nape, black bandit mask through the eye, small white wing patch, long black tail with white edges, dark grey bill and legs. Sexes similar Juveniles paler versions of adults.

Distribution

Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, and has recently been recorded from Sri Lanka.

Taxonomy

Polytypic. Consists of two subspecies.

Habitat

Scrubby areas and cultivation.

Behaviour

The diet includes lizards, large insects, small birds and rodents.

3-5 eggs are laid.
