Identification

18–20 cm (7-8 in)

  • Rufous head
  • Rufous underparts with black bars

Similar Species

Chestnut-headed Crake and Russet-crowned Crake

Distribution

South America: found from south-eastern Colombia to eastern Peru, Ecuador and western Amazonian Brazil.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Placed in genus Laterallus by some authorities.

Habitat

Marshy vegetation, long wet grass on pool edges and streams.

Behaviour

Diet

There is no information currently available on their diet.

Breeding

The build a domed nest with a side entrance.

Vocalisation

Call: a low churring rattle.
