Philydor rufum
Identification
Length 18-19cm (7-7½in)
- East slope birds are olive brown above, with rusty forehead and buff eyebrow. Throat is bright ochre-buff, with duller underparts.
- West slope birds similar but darker overall, with rusty primaries and tail and greyish-olive crown.
Distribution
Southeastern South America: Brazil and Paraguay, extreme northeast Argentina. Both slopes of Andes in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
Also found in Central America in Panama and Costa Rica.
Taxonomy
This is a polytypic species[1] consisting of 7 subspecies.

Habitat
Sub canopy and borders of semi-open semi-tropical forest.
Behaviour

Forages singly or in pairs. Agile and fast-moving forager on tree branches; sometimes hangs upside-down. They hunt for insects such as spiders and their eggs, katydids and crickets.
Breeding
They nest in holes in trees or banks. It is thought this species is monogamous.
