Xiphorhynchus guttatus

Inlcudes: Lafresnaye's Woodcreeper; Dusky-billed Woodcreeper

Identification

22·5–29·5 cm (8¾-11½ in)

  • Rufous upperparts
  • Olive brown underparts, wings and tail
  • Streaked buff head, neck, mantle and chest

Bill

  • Long, slightly decurved, and hooked
  • Dark grey upper mandible
  • Pale greyish-horn lower mandible

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Guianas Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

Dusky-billed Woodcreeper group

  • X. g. eytoni:
  • South Amazonian Brazil south of the Amazon (Rio Madeira to Maranhão)
  • X. g. vicinalis:
  • Brazil south of the Amazon (Rio Madeira to Rio Tapajós)
  • X. g. gracilirostris:
  • North-eastern Brazil (Serra do Baturité, Ceará)

Some authorities split the Lafresnaye's Woodcreeper Xiphorhynchus guttatoides and/or Dusky-billed Woodcreeper Xiphorhynchus eytoni from this species.

Habitat

Humid forest and woodland.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of arthropods with small invertebrates added at times. Items taken may include ants, insects and spiders.

Breeding

They build a bark-lined nest in a tree hole or hollow stump. The clutch consists of 2 white eggs.

Vocalisation

Call: - a loud chev-re chev-re.
