Central America: found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Netherlands Antilles
South America: occurs only in Colombia and Ecuador
Taxonomy
This species used to be placed in genus Tangara.
Subspecies
There are 4 subspecies[1]:
- S. l. larvata:
- Tropical southern Mexico (northern Oaxaca and Tabasco) to northern Costa Rica
- S. l. centralis:
- Caribbean slope of Costa Rica and western Panama
- S. l. franciscae:
- Pacific slope of Costa Rica and western Panama
- S. l. fanny:
Habitat
Rain Forest: forest edges and second growth areas; gardens; highland river borders; lowland forest and agriculture areas. Observed at heights around 1,524 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of fruit and insects.
