Identification

Indian Griffon Vulture (Long-billed Griffon) Gyps indicus

Distribution

RANGE Southern Asia. A species very much in decline through a recent epidemic. Formerly widespread throughout India and from the Himalyas east to Burma and northern Indochina and south to the north of the Malay Peninsula but range and numbers now seriously reduced. Resdident with some dispersal of young birds.

Taxonomy

SUBSPECIES Two races are recognised: the nominate across most of range with nudiceps in north-east India

Habitat

Nests colonially on cliff ledges in mountains and open country and often close to towns and villages.
