Identification
21–24 cm (8¼-9½ in)
Stocky appearance. Fine whitish streaks on brown crown and greyish brown throat and breast is diagnostic.
Mantle, wings and tail rich olive yellow; belly whitish; undertail coverts yellowish.
Crown feathers sometimes raised in short shaggy crest.
Distribution
Himalayas, southern China, south-east Asia and the Malay Peninsula.
Taxonomy
Sometimes also placed in genus Hypsipetes
Subspecies
There are 9 subspecies[1]:
- I. m. mcclellandii: Eastern Himalayas (western Uttar Pradesh to eastern Assam)
- I. m. ventralis: SW Burma (Chin Hills and Arakan Yoma Mts.)
- I. m. tickelli: Eastern Burma (northern Shan States) to north-westerb Thailand
- I. m. similis: North-eastern Burma (Kachin) to south-western China (Yunnan) and northern Indochina
- I. m. holtii: Southern China (Sichuan to Fujian and Guangdong)
- I. m. loquax: Northern and eastern Thailand to southern Laos (Bolavens Plateau)
- I. m. griseiventer: Southern Vietnam (Langbian Plateau)
- I. m. canescens: South-eastern Thailand (Khao Kuap region)
- I. m. peracensis: Peninsular Thailand to northern Malaysia (Selangor and Pahang)
Habitat
Broad-leafed evergreen forests, also oak, rhododendron and pine forests and forest edges. Usually staying up in the canopy.
Behaviour
Rather sluggish. Usually in loose parties of up to five.Usually keeps to leafy cover but will sometimes perch in the open. Tame and confiding.
Diet
Feeds in fruiting trees and shrubs together with other birds. Often obtains berries by hovering clumsily below strands of them. They also eat insects.
