Distribution
Central and South America
Central America: Costa Rica and Panama
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina.
This species has several non-contigous populations.

Subspecies
Six subspecies are recognized1:
- O. c. frater:
- Discontinuously distributed Costa Rica and western Panama
- O. c. brooksi:
- Mountains of eastern Panama
- O. c. hypoglaucus:
- O. c. phelpsi:
- O. c. tocantinsi:
- Central Brazil (Goiás to Pará and Amapá)
- O. c. cristatus:
Restall2 additionally mentions tacarcunae.

Canopy of wet forest.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes fruit and some invertebrates.
Breeding
The small cup nest is built by the female and placed on a branch. The adult disgorges food to the chicks.
