Description

Overall black with some structure on the neck, and a strong, parrot-like bill. Tail is long and rounded, and the flight looks weak with rapid wing-beats alternating with glides.

Distribution and Taxonomy

The monotypic Smooth-billed Ani is found from tropical southern USA to northern Argentica, Brazil, and the West Indies. Even with the weak flight is still thought to make periodic invasions from the Caribbean to Belize Cays.

Habitat

Often occur in the drier part of Dominica, often in areas disturbed by human activities including second-growth forest. Elsewhere mostly found in lowland and open habitats. Mostly eats insects.
