Alternative name: Sooty Robin

Turdus nigrescens
Location: Monteverde Reserve, Costa Rica.

Identification

24-25.5 cm. Very typical appearance and habits of the Turdus genus, but easily identifiable by color - brown-black with black wings and tail, and a black area between the orange bill and the eye. Orange legs, bare eye ring, and pale grey iris are diagnostic. The female is similar but browner and somewhat paler, with yellow-orange bare parts. The juvenile resembles the adult female but has buff or orange streaks on the head and upperparts and dark spotting on the underparts.

Distribution

Highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.

Habitat

Open areas and oak forest edge.

Behaviour

It builds a heavy grass-lined cup nest. 2 unmarked greenish-blue eggs are laid between March and May.

It turns leaf litter seeking insects and spiders, and also eats small fruits.
