Garden (Yard) List 2012 (6 Viewers)

Perfect watching weather today, mild (10c!!) and bright. A few good repeats: 11 Golden plover, Buzzards up, a pair of Treecreepers, but nothing new!

No. 44- Tufted Duck

a little short of a week ago when the local pool was virtually frozen over. Tis a garden lifer too.

No. 45- Song Thrush
Lovely to hear the start of the song this morning when leaving for work. One sat in the tree in the back garden and a another in the near distance in song too, its very early days yet, but certainly a sign of spring on its way

I believe that Sandweich Tern does occasionally overwinter on the Irish/SW British coast, and may becoming more regular of late (global warming?)

The ones coming from Germany of course? ... ;)

One had been seen a couple of miles away the previous weekend, with one off Plymouth the same day- maybe a slight movement from elsewhere. I think a few more might overwinter off Ireland - more habitat and possibly milder winters with the gulf stream. Of course if a few individuals are overwintering already and we then get a cold winter they are still gonna hang around to a degree.

Was rather unexpected for the garden year list at all (not so common around Falmouth), but very surprising for mid-winter, agreed!

(Birdguides has 5 records since Jan 1st - of course this is only the ones that get reported to them. Six at Portaferry, County Down on the 12th Jan)

Nothing much to add to my lists, but following near completion of house improvements, I have discovered that if I sleep the wrong way round on my bed, I don't actually have to get up anymore - picture taken from the bed :t:

That's a young Great Spot...that you shot in June..;)

Seriously...you've opened up a potentially interesting thread there Jos!
Birds seen from one's bed.....I've had male Sprawk in one open window across the centre fixed pane and out the other open window whilst in pursuit of a Blue Tit.(with me under the covers). Also Hobby, Hawfinch and Goshawk from the horizontal...needless to say I hit the vertical instantaneously on each occasion! :t:

When I lived in a small village in the UK, I had all three species of Woodpeckers from my bed in the same year.;)
