Swarovision 8X32...SE death knell (1 Viewer)

Having tried the 8.5x42 SV and loved it, I know I am really scared to try the 8x32SV now after all this.;)

Steve,

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you since your buying cycle for upgrading Swaros is 20 years. By that time binoculars will all be digital and have the capability to send as well as receive images to or from anywhere in the world. A birder in Costa Rica could send an image from his bin to yours and you could send an image from your bins to his and even pan and tilt the image to see areas of the landscape you want to explore - "smart bins".

They might even invent a morphing "Silly Putty" compound that will enable the user to adjust the body and eyecups to universally conform to anyone's face and hands. When someone else picks up the same bin, it will conform to his face and hands.

Bins will also contain a chromism compound that will enable you to make it any color you'd like. Women will love this option since the bin color can be made to match their ensemble. Men will love it because they can go "camo" when they use their bins to hunt, green or black when they use them to bird, and ostrich skin color when they go yachting.

You will also be able to dial up a color bias or neutral color scheme or filter you'd like and adjust the distortion level to a pleasing level.

With all that flexibility in optics and ergonomics, how will a person decide to buy one brand or the other? Simple. You pay for the logo as an option for purely prestige reasons.

Feed from the constraints of branding, sports optics technology will no longer focus on how specialized and different each bin can be, but rather on accommodating a wide range of users and preferences.

As to trading in your SLC on an SV EL, that ain't going to happen, because the SLC was a Christmas present from your wife, and that assures that it will be with you until death do you part. ;)

So, are we talking about the best binoculars available today, or is it an economic affordability discussion, ie:- what I can afford to spend? Or is it sociology and class discussion; or are we talking about Sci-Fi future binoculars; or is it about who got the best binocular deal in the past or present?

Cause I am not sure. Funny how these threads run off and go off on a tangent .;)

Its likely to turn into a post about "Sesickness" again if the Sternmeister has his way.

Optics evolve and improve, the fact that the Sv is top of the ladder right now does`nt lower the abilities of an SE or Fl, they remain the superb optics they were when we purchased them, but lets applaud the continuing advances, its what got us too the SE` and Fl`s of this world.

I`v just noticed Dennis that Allbino`s ranks the 8x32 SE below the 8x32 Fl, whats going on ?

They don't do the DVD test or they would see the SE is sharper. Still it's a pretty good rank for a $600.00 binocular versus an $1800.00 binocular.

All of those things are valid arguments when one alleges that one's binocular is the best in the world and far superior to all others. If you set yourself up as a target you can't complain about the ricochets!

Allbinos takes off points from the SE because it it not waterproof or nitrogen filled and because there are too many flares near the prisms but at the same time they give it a plus for "high quality prisms and coatings." It takes off points from the Zeiss for "slightly egg shaped pupil." I don't know how this could be if you use lenses with a total of 9 elements and a split prism! It should be perfect! Right?

Do they ?

They list the above in the cons section, but I see no score for waterproofing, they get 7/8 for the housing. Looks like its pretty even with the Fl strong on C/A control and weak on distortion.

Bob, I have never had an issue with you before, and I do not really have one now.

But first of all- I never said that the Swaro SV was "far superior to all others". I just did a review of my findings and stated in that thread and here that in my opinion the Swaro 8x32 SV was the best of the ones I tested it against and was the best that I had ever used.

Was not planning or trying to "set myself up as a target" either; but I can take the bullets. And I am not into class warfare or have any need to compare myself to others or feel that I need to do any chest bumping. The fact is that prior to buying these recent 8x32 binoculars to test and upgrade from what I currently had; the only alpha that I had was a 1999 7x30 Swaro SLC. And I had a very good ( excellent really ) 8x32 Pentax DCF ED. Ever since I did my review of the top Swaro 30 and 32 mm bino's last summer, I had thought about upgrading to a better quality than what I had. Last year I did not keep the Swaro EL that I tested, even though it was better than what I had, because I felt that what I had was good enough. But, then this spring and early summer, I thought long and hard about upgrading. But I am somewhat frugal and do not like to just throw my money around.

So- I made the decision to buy some to decide which ones I wanted to upgrade to. And even after testing and deciding which ones was best for me, I still had a tough time justifying spending the money. I still kept thinking that what I already had was good enough. But then the tipping point as far as following through with the upgrade was my Mothers passing this summer. I decided to buy the one I really like and keep them in honor of her. I do not really see myself needing, nor wanting to further upgrade and buy in the future- but time will tell. Even then, I will not sell these SV's since I really decided to get them in honor of my Mother.

As far as what you feel the "leisure class" pays for these newer binoculars- don't assume that everybody pays full retail for all of these. Just like I tell my kids- even if you want an expensive car ( not my thing) you can get one if you want to, just let someone else take the depreciation. I never like to pay full price for almost anything if I do not have to.

Like you, I like and appreciate a good bargain. And, let's just say that my net price that I paid for these Swaro 8x32 SV's after the discounted price I paid and the sale of some recent binocular purchases rivals your good deal that you were happy with for your EDG's. Another thing that is cool to me about the good deal that I got on these SV's is that my Mother always liked a good deal herself and she also liked quality, but was frugal with money. Which makes me further think of her when I use them.

So flame away and make me your target if you want to- I am a big boy, I can take it. But don't lumb me with these others you speak of and assume I am some "leisure class" snob who thinks what I have is better than anyone else's. Because you don't know me.

Cheers B :)

Nowadays it seems to be impossible to say Swarovskis are your personal favourite bino, without someone wanting to start a pie-fight, accusing you of being "blind", or part of a leisured class. I think this proves something, but I'm not sure what. Meanwhile, we all work hard for our money, and I thought this whole capitalism shin-dig was supposed to work on the principle of personal choice. They're only binoculars, so I'll choose mine if that's okay with everyone.;)

Bob,
You have a nice collection...

Swarovski SLC 7X42
Leica Trinovid 7X42
Nikon LX/L 8X32
Nikon 10X32 EDG
Nikon 8X32 SE
Nikon 10X42 SE
Nikon 12X50 SE
Nikon 10X25
Nikon 10X35 EII
8X20 Trinny
single hinged Zeiss Victory
8X30 SLC

All of those things are valid arguments when one alleges that one's binocular is the best in the world and far superior to all others. If you set yourself up as a target you can't complain about the ricochets!

Maybe it should be in some people's eyes like a wealth distribution concept, and we need to pass ours around.

Funny thing is, it is all relative. Because someone here can bemoan $2100 binoculars as being part of the leisure class and then be very happy with their windfall of a deal of paying "only" $999 for a set of optics. When to the average binocular purchaser in this country, that $999 purchase is 4-5 x what they pay for a binocular.

Steve:

Maybe a better thought is a nice Christmas present "for" the wife.
Before you upgrade binoculars, you need a visit to the jewelry store. ;)

Christmas will be here before we know it.

8X20 Trinny

8X30 SLC

Thanks.

Every last one of them was bought at a sale or closeout price, or as a demo, or even 2nd hand like the 10 x 42 SE or as a refurb (40% off) like the 10 x 35 EII which is not listed above. I also got a 10% membership discount on my Swift 804 (not listed here) from the Hawk Mountain store many years ago.

The unlisted 8 x 30 EII I paid full price for around the year 2000 and the Bushnell 7 x 26 I paid full price for some time ago. And I have a Leitz 7 x 42 Trinovid BA I got for 1/2 price from a Canadian Dealer after it was discontinued. It's still useful.

One of these days I'll start getting rid of them. Probably by donating many of them to the Charity that collects them for use in Africa. I've forgotten it's name. Can anyone here tell me it?

Stephen,

If it makes any difference I wasn't targeting you or any one else.

The best way to start a spirited discussion here is to make an extravagant statement about a specific binocular. Extravagant statements will attract responses that go off on tangents or are off topic or are hyperbolic (to which I plead guilty here).

I hope that clears the air somewhat.

Darn, I really liked that comment about ricochets too!;)

Bob

If I could transport you to Cape May you would see...
lots of migrating raptors
lots of birders
two 8X32 SE's
one 10X42 SE
unknown number of 8X32 Swarovision bins

The 8X32 SV is being used by experienced official counters and birders of all ages and genders. Swarovski set a new standard with the 8X32 Swarovision.

The bottom line is...I can barely bring myself to say this but...
The 8X32 Swarovision is the finest 8X32 available. Yes, it's better than my beloved 8X32 SE. The SV is simply the better binocular. It's as sharp as the SE with less CA. It also has perfect eye relief, friendly eye cups, and a wider FOV. Its "WOW" factor is truly off the charts. And it has sharp edges and no noticeable "rolling ball".

My wife loved it so much she will be getting one of her own. Lucky her!

The extravagant statement is above. See if you can spot it

Bob

I forgot...
That's Bob's collection, not mine.
I'll amend the post.

Interesting- that puts things in a different light. I think then the value of my meager collection of binoculars is more middle class rather than being "leisure class". Then I would say that collection above would be more in line with a "high society" or upper class structure.

I am just not so sure, it makes my head hurt; and it gets all so confusing when we try to label people and put them into a class. There must be a formula or something. ;)

Is it 2 or 3 SE's that equal an alpha?
