    East Yorkshire where for Dippers

Hi all in need of a little bit of help. Going up to East Yorkshire next week (Thurs) for 10 days. Will be going to Filey Brigg for the sea watching. I have the 'Where to watch birds in Yorkshire' book but would like the benefit of members experience. A bird we would particularly like to get is...

    Jobu gimbal heads

Got the lightweight one and they work well but don't forget to add the cost of plates @ £40 a time. Pete

Portable photo storage/backup unit: which one?

I have the smartdisk flashtrax which works well, mine is the older model so I don't think it will play mp3. As for the screen it is 3.5 inches, but to be honest it is very slow going through the files and to be honest the screen is not big enough for me (ageing eyesight) but I can connect to...

Rutland Birdfair is it Wheelchair friendly

Providing the weather stays as is and does not rain a lot between now and the fair, also as long as you are reasonably fit and upper body strong you will be ok. I did it a couple of years ago and managed ok. If you can get a pusher that will help on some of the small slopes. Slopes not far about...

Manfrotto 393 Long Lens head (Gimbal type)

Tom I am not suggesting you go for a gimbal like mine just saying that a gimbal works well with that lens. I think there is a big difference in price mine cost £300+ I believe the 393 is quite a bit cheaper and should work just as well. Best bet if poss try one out. Best of luck Pete

Manfrotto 393 Long Lens head (Gimbal type)

Hi Tom sorry I cannot comment on the 393 as I have never used it. But what I can tell you is the 400 F5.6 works very well with a gimble type head. I use it on a BWG head similar to the King Cobra and I wouldn't go back to a normal pan & tilt head. I even use this head with my scope (Swarovski...

Thanks for the answers guys. Nigel, normally I wouldn't but this was for a project at work and they required evidence of time and date shot taken. Pete

Best place to buy a Tamron/Kenco teleconverter?

You are correct Steve, with the pins taped the camera does not know the tc is there and only reports the F number the lens is set at. As I have only used mine with the pins taped I cannot say wether this si still the same without the tape. Perhaps someone else can comment. Pete

Best place to buy a Tamron/Kenco teleconverter?

Max I am using the Kenko pro 300 dg on the canon 400 F5.6 with the pins taped to get AF. For the most part it works, as long as you have good light. So far I have been quite pleased with the results. I got mine from Ebay Digital rev and only paid the published price + postage i.e. not import or...

    20D/300D date time stamp

Hi All sorry if this is a dumb question but, is it possible to set either the 20D or 300D up to put the date and time on the image. As you can do with some compacts. If so how, Iv'e gone through the manual but I'm beggared if I can see how. Thanks Pete

    Manfrotto 501 head-which plate?

Hi Ron now I will stand corrected, it's quite a while since I had/used this head but I do not think it will take a Q/R plate. In that the plate slides between 2 guides and as far as I can remember is fairly quick to take off anyway. Hopefully someone who uses this head in the here and now can...

DIY Canon EOS 300d Remote Control

Whoops sorry Brett got the wrong end of the stick, that will teach me to read more thoroughly. Wife suffers with vibration whilst you can get a remote for this the DIY fix is a baseball bat. Luckily she is not on the forum. Pete

DIY Canon EOS 300d Remote Control

Nice idea but a bit expensive. I am at the moment cruising Ebay for a remote for the wife. I do not expect to pay more than about £20 for one. Pete

    Sigma macro lenses.

The 150 is the later incarnation of this lens, depending on what camera you want to use it on the 180 is an older lens and would need checking with sigma if it is to go on a digital camera. The 150 should have no problems. Pete

    Canon Restrictive Practice-Do You Agree?

Hi Arthur all points noted. I guess unless we can get the retailers say either side of the pond to come clean then we will never know. To get back to the original thread, I cannot see what Canon's problem is. To my way of thinking as long as they can ship enough units to make a profit, stay in...

    Canon Restrictive Practice-Do You Agree?

The point I was trying to make is Do Canon the manufacturer sell at a given price i.e. Canon ef teleconverter from the factory X amount of yen to their distributors wherever they are. I will try to put it another way item 1 from manufaturer cost X. Is this the same cost to UK, USA etc. Then it...

    Canon Restrictive Practice-Do You Agree?

I am a little confused here, but then I am getting on. I cannot see why it should matter to Canon, surely they sell their lenses etc to retail outlets wherever they may be at a given price. To my way of thinking it is then where the differences start to show in the different countries tax...

What's your technique when out with your DSLR camera?

Pretty much as above but also I usually rattle of a couple of shots on something/habitat and check the Histogram. Also this is where shooting in RAW becomes an advantage, in that whatever you get wrong you have a chance of sorting in software. Good luck Pete

Telephoto lens advice for new Canon 350D camera.

Hi Max as for the 2 lenses you mention I would go for the 170-500 if your prime use is for Birds/Wildlife. As for buying from Digitalrev I presume you have seen them on Ebay, you will have to factor in the extra costs of custom & excise duty also possibly VAT. I have bought from abroad in the...
