    Early goldcrest chicks

Isn't it very early to see two goldcrest chicks in Wiltshire today?

    RSPB survey

There's another RSPB survey under way last week and this weekend and yet again I find that there are birds that I would like to include, but the survey insists that birds must land in my garden. What's the point of that? I have little egrets, rooks, buzzards, barn owls, house martins...

Is this a dark green fritillary?

Is this a dark green fritillary? There seem to be lots of similar fritillaries and I'm not sure which this is.

Tadpoles are still in my pond

I've still got a few tadpoles in my pond. I didn't see any froglets leaving the pond this year; I did see two which appeared to be getting back legs in late July but didn't see them out of the pond. Is it unusual to have tadpoles so late? They usually die off much earlier as far as I can recall.

    Hornet? wasp? bee? ID please

What is this? Is it a type of hornet? It flew off with an aggressive buzz. As it was seen on buddleia two days running perhaps it is a type of bee. The insect below has a very broad body and black stripes which are constant thickness; the hornets and wasps I have seen have thinner bodies and...

    Dead blue tit chicks

Blue tit chicks have died just a day or two before leaving the nest box and I wonder why. Great tit chicks of almost the same age have just left their nest box. I've just cleaned out both nest boxes. The blue tit box is on the wall of my house under wide thatched eaves and gets a lot of sun...

    Blue tits tapping inside nestbox

Blue tits made a nest about a week ago in a nestbox and I have since been hearing a constant tapping from inside, like a woodpecker. The box is on the wall of my house and I can hear the tapping for ten minutes or so several times a day, long after the nest was finished. What is she doing...

What and when do skylarks eat?

What and when do skylarks eat? I've been listening to skylarks over the last few weeks, they must expend a lot of energy hovering in a stiff breeze on a cold day. They hardly ever come down to the ground and when they do it's only for a few seconds in the middle of a heavily sprayed field...

    Can I eat bird food?

I bought a large bag of mixed bird table food from RSPB but the birds don't eat the black sunflower seeds, so they clutter up the bird board or get blown to the ground where rats come and eat them. I now sort the feed and have a large glass jar full of black sunflower seeds. I only need a few...

    Fly I've never seen before

ID please; it looks bigger than a hoverfly. Seen in Wiltshire, UK.

    Blackbird pecks slow worm

I watched a cock blackbird find a slow worm in the grass and peck it. The slow worm was a small one, about six inches long and a bit broader than a very fat worm. The slow worm jumped, wriggled and made a dash for a hedge. The blackbird managed to peck it several times and went under the hedge...

Are chicks being fed too much by greedy adults?

I'm going to give up feeding birds very soon - for ever! (But I suppose I will relent on this). I'm fed up with a greedy cock blackbird that scoffs everything for his chicks. (The hen never comes to the bird table even though her nest is only fifteen feet away). I put out chopped nuts and...

    Hoverflies on a sun-baked bank

I have a large bank at the back of my cottage that is nearly vertical; there is no topsoil on it, it's rock-hard subsoil with small stones in it and a few weeds. It faces south and for the last week or so in the lovely sun it has had hundreds of hoverflies moving over the surface about half an...

What size nestbox hole for great tits?

I notice that the RSPB sells nestboxes with two sizes of hole - for blue tits or larger for sparrows. I bought a nest box with a small hole for blue tits but today a great tit is trying to make the hole bigger. The trouble is the new nestbox is made of hard plywood and it's not having much...

    Where are the hen blackbirds?

Since last autumn I have only seen cock blackbirds in my country garden and my neighbour's orchard - as many as five in sight at a time - but no hens. Today I saw the first hen. Do you think it's because the hens migrated somewhere and are just returning, while the cocks stayed here?

    Thames Estuary wind farms

Plans for two major offshore wind farms in the Thames Estuary are expected to be agreed by the government on Monday. One of the schemes would be the world's biggest with 341 turbines in 144 sq miles (232 sq km) between Margate in Kent and Clacton, Essex. The other project would be seven...

IE7 final release may be on 18th October

It looks like IE7 will be released for manual download on 18 October 2006. See http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/10/11/IE7-Installation-and-Anti_2D00_Malware-Applications.aspx which also has some tips on installation such as turning off internet access after downloading, turning off AV and...

Photo file size - why different?

I took two photos today, both 1024 x 768 TIF and the original file size of both is 2319 KB. I reduced the sizes for Birdforum. One is 778 x 578 px, (449,684 square px) and is 58 KB as a jpg, taken as f 5.6 at 1/250. The other is 703 x 566 px (397,898 square px) and is 121 KB as a jpg, taken...

    What is your scruffiest bird?

This robin always has a rough grey patch between the two orange parts of his chest and seems to have been injured there; perhaps another bird pulled the feathers out and they have never regrown properly. He's looking worse today because he seems to have had a bath. He's one of a pair very busy...

House martins are back in UK

I saw house martins around the River Ebble in Wiltshire today. A sure sign that the cold spring must be nearly over. A south west blustery wind must have brought them. Fruit tree blossom is just waiting for the chance to burst out here.

    C-770UZ not recording in sequence

At first my camera always recorded the next photo as the next sequential number even if the previous one had been deleted. I took out the battery and lost the settings, which I have re-set. The camera does start numbering from the previous one but then does it differently. Let's say I take...

    Bird flu in Turkey

Bird flu is getting closer. I have a bird table like many other people and the birds are often quite close to me and I also touch the bird table. I also look after my neighbour's free range chickens sometimes. Should I take any special precautions?

Male, female, chick and other plumage details

I notice that the database has one photo selected as a good example of a bird and then a link either to "Click here to view more images of... " or to "Search the gallery for photos of...". Is it possible to have selected photos of male, female, chick and other plumage (say winter plumage)...

    Photography through glass

Two of the recent photos in my album were taken through double glazed windows which were dirty; I didn't have time to clean or open them. Does glass make the photos slightly grey? Are there any camera settings to offset the effect of glass?

    Global warming but local cooling

Yesterday I heard reports that the gulf stream is two thirds weaker than normal as it has increased towards north Africa and the trend should continue, resulting in more easterly Siberian winds. This is and will result in ever cooler winters. I presume this should mean that the eels that have...
