Hi all,

Just back from our annual two weeks in Devon. Mainly Dartmoor, but also drove around a bit. I am sure the first is a chiffchaff? And thought the other was also (pics 2&3), but looking at downloaded pic looks more yellow/green - can you ID for me please ?

Hello Julie,

the first is a Common Whitethroat. The bright orangey-brown wing, contrasting against the colder body and the black tertials is nearly enough to ID this species excluding vagrants in Europe.

The second is a Willow Warbler. Please note
  • smooth and bright colouration vaguely remiscent of a warm Melodious/Icterine
  • orange tinge to legs and feet
  • pp seems a little bit on the short side, but longer than most Chiffchaffs
