Today I made the long drive to the Ohio River Valley along the western edge of West Virginia. I had a target list of seven species that are difficult or impossible to see in my part of the state. I saw five of the seven. The fifth, Prothonotary Warbler, is not listed here because I saw it in Panama in February.

I really struggled with this bird this year. I should have easily seen one in late April or early May. Since then I’ve looked every weekend in normally reliable locations and in places where others have reported them. Until today, I was just unable to find any.
Today I made the long drive to the southwestern corner of the state to chase a rarity that was found a couple of days ago. I quickly found my target; in fact I saw it before I even got out of the car.
