Wonder if I can break 300 before the end of the year...

Yesterday I ticked off the last regularly-occurring dabbling duck in my area.

Preble County Historical Society and Nature Preserve:
158. Northern Pintail

Time and possible new species for the year are quickly running out. There are a few birds I could still get, but I’d need some luck. I did get lucky today with a rare bird for this region.

355. Rough-legged Hawk

Dave

This afternoon I found a mega rarity for this area. Only the second record for my county, the first of which I found over nine years ago.

356. Northern Shrike

Dave

Managed to squeeze in three more year ticks to take me to 300 for the year. Including two birds that in normal circumstances I would see easily, but this year I have not been in range for until this week.

298. Great Black-backed Gull
299. Eurasian Oystercarcher
300. Merlin

I had a fun morning, picking up two lifers which nicely rounded out a good year of birding (by my standards).

Fernald Preserve:
158. Short-eared Owl
159. Hooded Merganser

That brings me to 159 species for the year, 50 of which were lifers.

P.S. According to my previous posts these birds should be numbered 159 and 160. I made a mistake in my first post that lead to an extra bird in my list on this thread.

This is the first year in almost 10 years that I am sub-300 species in a calendar year. But between Covid and becoming a father this year, I still feel very happy to have seen the birds I did. Here's to a safer and birdier 2022!

Malibu Christmas Bird Count in December:
290. Nanday Parakeet
291. Red-breasted Sapsucker
292. Lewis's Woodpecker
